International Academic School, Abu Dhabi

International Academic School, Abu Dhabi first opened to students in 1987 and currently serves approximately 870 students from a diverse backgrounds, but predominately from the Arabic speaking world. The school employs 60 teachers.

IAS has been defined as a “villa school” – actually, it is four villas connected with corridors, and as such has been required by ADEC to move to new purpose built accommodation. The school has been gifted land in Khalifa City B. As yet there is no timetable for the move.

The school is mixed until Grade 6, and then offers separate streams for girls and boys.

The school currently follows a UK based curriculum, offering both IGCSE and A’ Levels. IAS is affiliated with both London University Examinations and Assesment Council and The University of Cambridge Local Examinations Syndicate. A US curriculum is also offered in high school, which will be the main curriculum offered when the school moves, based on the State of Virginia, USA guidelines. The school will continue to follow Ministry of Education curriculum for Arabic, Islamic Studies and Social Studies.

Note the Dubai school of the same name, currently rated Acceptable by the emirate’s education regulator, is also in the process of moving to a US curriculum.

The school does not provide information on its external examination results, so it is not clear as to the number of students that sit the IGCSE examinations, their success rate, or how many students go onto study A’Level.

Extra-curricular activities include football, basketball, music, art, and environmental club.

Fees at the school range from 10,942 AED for KG1 to 22,675 AED for Grade 12. The fees include activities, bus (from inside Abu Dhabi – there is a different fee structure for those coming from outside), registration and books.
