Dubai Gem Private School

Dubai Gem Private School

Dubai Gem Private School is also known as Dubai Gem School. Founded in 1973 it is one of the more established schools in Dubai.

The school is based in Oud Metha in Bur Dubai, and takes students from 3 to 18 years of age. In total 1,380 students (2013/14, down marginally on the academic year) are presently enrolled with, approximately, 111 teachers (as of 2012). According to the KHDA most students are of Indian nationality. Forty eight per cent of students are Muslim.

The school follows the British Curriculum leading to IGCSE examinations (in Grade 11), ‘AS’ (in Grade 12), and ‘A’ levels (in Grade 13).

The language of instruction and communication is English. Arabic is mandatory from KG1 to Grade 10 and optional from Grade 11 onwards. Islamic Studies and the Quran are mandatory for Islamic students while non-Islamic students study Moral Science.

The school has a satisfactory range of facilities including four Computer Laboratories, three Art Rooms, a Sports Centre – the school hires the ‘Iranian Club’, adjacent to the school, for the use of its swimming pools, sports oval and courts, and has two Medical Centres staffed by 2 nurses and a doctor. The school has invested in IT infrastructure over the last 12 months.

The school has achieved a KHDA ranking of ‘Good’ for the last four years. Dubai’s education authority notes outstanding attainment in a number of key subjects (specifically English, maths and science – a level of performance it has achieved consistently over a number of years). It also notes the school’s strong sense of community and civic responsibility of the students and their desire for learning. It also describes as the school environment as “caring”.

The KHDA also noted the effectiveness of the current Principal who is able to offer a clear vision for the school (2011/12 report) and leadership in general (2012/13 and 2013/14 reports).

To develop further the KHDA recommended a focus on the development of critical thinking and inquiry skills, along with a continued focus on teaching, learning and the application of assessment information, to continue to develop provision for students for whom Arabic is a first language and ensure full compliance across all stages of the school with the Ministry of Education requirements for this subject; to use assessment data to improve lesson planning and ensure that tasks are matched closely to the
learning needs of all students; to improve marking of work to provide students with more detailed and formative information about their next steps in learning and to improve resources and facilities.

On a more positive note the KHDA notes teaching in the primary and Foundation Stage classes has continued to improve; the governance structure of the school has been developed and consequently, a wider range of stakeholders actively supported the school in decision-making processes; and that the school has taken a number of important steps to improve the arrangements to support students with special educational needs.

The school has a link to its 2013 examination results here. Unfortunately it seems to be broken.

School fees are relatively highly affordable for a UK curriculum school, but high mid-end for a school serving the Indian community, ranging from 9,901 AED in KG1 to 20,366 AED in Grade 13. You can download the PDF of fees here.

Dubai Gem nursery has a different fee structure of 6,000 AED per term. You can find the details here.

The buzz

The school seems popular amongst its students and teachers. Parents are a little more skeptical, but in general a satisfied bunch. There are the usual grumblings over fees. There is a strong desire expressed for more options for extra-curricular activities. Parents believe the school leadership is strong. Overall there was a high level of satisfaction (but limited response) in the Which School Advisor school survey over academic performance.
