CBSE Announces Moves to Discourage Rote Learning

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) in India has announced it is taking measures to discourage rote learning and to make their exam papers ‘more application-based’, according to reports in Indian media.

In the 2014 maths examinations all papers will come with pre-loaded formulas required to answer specific questions. These formulas will also be published on science and commerce papers.

“Instead the formulas, themselves, will be given on the question papers and all the student must do is identify the right one to solve the problem,” said a senior CBSE official.

Further reforms will be announced at the end of February when the recommendations of a series of subject committees will be revealed.  The committees are looking at question papers for classes XI and XII.

The Board will implement the changes from the new academic session of 2014-15 for Class XI and 2015-16 for Class XII.
